Health & Elderly Care

Health & Elderly Care

China has the fastest-ageing population in human history while the state’s support remains substantial. The people above 60 years rise from 8% (200 million people) in 1950 to 11 % (760 million people) in 2011, and it is expected that the growth will reach to 22% (2 billion people) by 2050. Traditionally the children take care of their parents but due to change of attitude and small apartments, to live with your married child is not for granted anymore. Some children are living abroad or migrate to another part of the country for work, leaving the parents behind. Rising per capita Incomes and the ageing of the population give a reason for the tremendous growth of the Healthcare expenditures. With a population of nearly 1.4 billion the Healthcare expenditures in China has been up to US $ 640 billion (5.9 % of GDP) in 2016.

China set top priority with the health and elderly care sector. The National Planning Guideline for Health Care Services (2015-2020), in which investment by private capital (foreign and domestic) are encouraged, thus creates huge opportunities for Chinese and Western companies in this sector.

The Guideline emphasises the reforming of the following: developing infrastructure (increasing private and state hospitals and medical institutions), improving the quality of training for medical professionals and upgrade quality in medical services, developing of comprehensive medical insurance, embracing new technology and the use of high-tech medical devices and applications. Over 80% of the high-end medical devices sold in China are coming from abroad and is to be expected to grow by 18-20% annually.

China and the Netherlands have signed several Memoranda of Understandings regarding the safety of drugs and medical devices (October 2015). Lately, regarding the development of elderly care and long-term care and policies, the development of policies regarding financial sustainability of elderly care and long-term care, the development, improvement, and monitoring of quality and safety standards for elderly nursing and home (October 2016).
